What Is Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB)?
Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB) is a lightweight board containing a high percentage of asbestos fibres (commonly amosite – brown asbestos).
It was used for its excellent fire-resistant and insulating properties, making it a popular building material in both domestic and commercial properties throughout the 20th century.
Unlike asbestos cement, AIB is softer and more friable, meaning it can release fibres more easily if disturbed.
Where Is AIB Found?

- Softer than asbestos cement (can be scratched or dented more easily)
- Often found painted, sealed, or covered
- May show fibrous edges if damaged
Because it can look similar to other non-asbestos boards, professional testing is often required to confirm its presence.
Is AIB Dangerous?
Yes — AIB is considered a higher-risk asbestos material.
This is because:
- It contains a higher percentage of asbestos fibres
- It is more friable than cement-based materials
- Fibres can be released easily if disturbed
